Wireframing Without Figma: 4 Free Methods

In the week it takes to learn Figma, you could sketch 50 wireframes.

πŸ“ Method 1 Β· Paper and Pen

Still the GOAT. For idea generation, paper is fastest and most honest. Fold A4 into 6 frames, sketch 6 concepts. 30 minutes.

Risk: take photos or you will lose them.

πŸ“± Method 2 Β· iPad + GoodNotes

All the paper upside plus storage. Drop in templates. Use iPhone Mockup to export an empty frame PNG into GoodNotes.

🌐 Method 3 · Excalidraw (free)

excalidraw.com. Hand-drawn style wireframes. Top pick. No signup, PNG export, save locally and it's free forever.

🎨 Method 4 · Straight to HTML

If you can code, skip wireframes and build gray-box HTML directly. Use Placeholder Image to fill empty image slots.

πŸ“ Wireframe Principles

  1. No color: grayscale only. Color makes you obsess over detail
  2. No real copy: lorem ipsum or xxxxx. Real text eats your time
  3. 5-min rule: stop when a screen takes more than 5 min
  4. Layout only: fonts and icons come later

πŸ›  Tools

πŸ’‘ Reality: solo projects can skip wireframing entirely with paper sketches. Self-censoring out of the process is normal.

πŸ“ Wireframe Tools

Mockup, placeholder, SVG all free.
