- JPG for photos, PNG for graphics. Smooth color transitions compress best with JPG; sharp logos/icons/text need PNG. Otherwise reach for WEBP or AVIF.
- WEBP is the 2026 default. Universal browser support; 25-35% smaller than JPG, 50% smaller than PNG.
- Thumbnails: 1280ร720 (16:9) covers most. YouTube, blog, social โ same ratio works everywhere.
- Use srcset for mobile. Don't ship 1920px images to phones. Download speed = bounce rate.
- Alt text matters for SEO. Describe the image to a person in 1-2 sentences. Don't stuff keywords.
