Movie ratios explained

2.39:1 (Cinemascope) is the modern blockbuster standard (Avengers, Interstellar, Inception). 2.35:1 is classic 60sโ€“70s Cinemascope. 1.85:1 (American Widescreen) is standard cinema. 1.78:1 (16:9) = HDTV (almost no letterbox). 1.43:1 (IMAX) is more square. For cinematic effect 2.39:1 hits hardest.
